Headline: Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Bashir Ahmed MSP visit Ethnic Enable
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon met with Ethnic Enable service users, carers, volunteers and staff on Monday 19th May 2008. Ms Sturgeon took the opportunity to learn more about the valuable services Ethnic Enable offers.
Nicola heard testimonies from carer Rukhsana Ghani who is the older sister and carer of Escapade service user Osman Ghani.
Osman is 8 years old and has Autism. Rukhsana gave a very moving account of challenges faced by Osman and his family on a daily basis.
Rukhsana told Nicola Sturgeon how after Osman's diagnosis the family lived without Disability Living Allowance for over a year until a friend told them about it. When the family learned about Ethnic Enable, a staff member visited conducted an assessment of needs and advised the family of their entitlements.
Osman became involved with Escapade and regularly enjoys mixing with children his own age in a safe and secure environment.
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon commented "I was very pleased to have had the opportunity to visit Ethnic Enable, and to hear about the work it is doing to support black and minority ethnic communities.
In particular, Imran Sabir's presentation of the 'LEGO model' was a useful visual representation of the barriers faced by disabled people from minority ethnic communities and demonstrated how Ethnic Enable is working to overcome those barriers.
It was a privilege to meet some of the staff, volunteers and service users of the project, and to hear from them first hand the difference that Ethnic Enable has made to their lives."
The Deputy First Minister also mentioned that over the next 3 years £93 million of funding has been allocated to the Third Sector across Scotland- which indicates the government's strong support of the voluntary sector.
Ms Sturgeon also signed Ethnic Enable volunteer certificates and presented them to the volunteers. The following Ethnic Enable volunteers received Certificates of Appreciation:
Special Certificate of Appreciation:
Osman Mohammed
