Imran Sabir- A Real Visionary

Chairperson - Imran Sabir Imran Sabir was a man of great talent, vision and determination. Sadly he was lost to us on the 3rd of March 2009.

Imran was the founder and Chairperson of Ethnic Enable. He with a group of friends set-up Ethnic Enable to empower individuals with disability from Minority Ethnic communities and their carers. Imran faced the barriers experienced by those with disability first hand- he not only felt excluded from his own community but also mainstream community.

Through the efforts of Ethnic Enable Imran spear-headed many projects including Outreach, Arabic Braille and Escapade.
Despite losing his sight at any early age Imran did not let his loss of sight affect his goals and aspirations. Imran studied Child Psychology with the Open University, attended courses on leadership and contributed to research and consultancy work.

Imran's charitable work continued beyond Ethnic Enable, he continued on his passion of enabling the visually impaired to learn the Quran. Imran used a unique and innovative method of lego modelling to convey his thoughts and ideas. This allowed Imran to express his views comprehensively and clearly.

Imran was a true gent, he was humble, thoughtful and patient. Imran was an accomplished writer whose poem 'A Disabled Society' won first prize at Project Empower's writing competition in 2008. Imran was an inspiration to us all at Ethnic Enable and will be missed greatly.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sabir family.

Ethnic Enable was awarded the coveted Investors in Volunteers accreditation by Volunteer Development Scotland on the 29th of April 2009 16/09/2009

Ethnic Enable was awarded the coveted Investors in Volunteers accreditation by Volunteer Development Scotland on the 29th of April 2009. Ethnic Enable is the first Minority Ethnic organisation in Glasgow to receive the accreditation and the second in Scotland. Investors in Volunteers is the UK quality standard for all organisations which involve volunteers in their work. The Standard enables organisations to comprehensively review their volunteer management, and also publicly demonstrate their commitment to volunteering. The Standard is based on four key areas of volunteer management:

  • planning for volunteer involvement
  • recruiting volunteers
  • selecting and matching volunteers
  • supporting and retaining volunteers

Ethnic Enable would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the accreditation process; namely Volunteer Development Scotland for their support in helping us attain the standard, Ethnic Enable staff and board and most importantly Ethnic Enable volunteers without whom the recognition of our achievements would not be possible.

For more information on the accreditation process and Ethnic Enable projects please visit out website, http://www.ethnicenable.org.uk

If you are interested in volunteering with Ethnic Enable or would like support or advice in supporting volunteers within your organisation please see our website for further details or email info@ethnicenable.org.uk.
